FORM-BASED CODING
Building Form and Street Space
Where the 20th Century Euclidian-Zoning model hyper-controls Land USE -- and only indirectly deals with the FORM of buildings and streets (with little success) -- Form-Based Coding deals directly with building FORM and sets only broad parameters for USE. Euclidian-Zoning is rooted in the problems of the Industrial Revolution (late 18th, early 19th, Century!) and fundamentally about keeping things apart.
Careful, understandable controls on building FORM, broad parameters on building USE to shape clear Public Space (good Streets and Squares). Towns and Cities are healthy to the degree that they properly integrate the various aspects of daily life.
